Goji Berries: Ancient. Chinese. Superfood.

Goji BerriesWe are pleased to bring you information this week on Goji Berries (Lycium barbarum) one of our most inquired -about products. Goji Berries, also called “Wolfberries” or “Gou Qi Zi,” have been steadily growing in popularity since they were first introduced to the North American market in the mid-1990s.

Goji Berries have been well-known in China for hundreds of years. Since ancient times the Chinese have purported a wide variety of health benefits to the berries; many of which have yet to be studied by Western medicine.

Goji Berries: The Ultimate Long Life Fruit?

One of the more intriguing myths surrounding the consumption of Goji Berries is that of Chinese herbalist Li Qing Yuen who is said to have lived from 1677 to 1933 (256 years) on a diet consisting largely of the berries.  While it is likely that this is only legend, there are supposedly extant documents issued from the Chinese Imperial government which congratulate Li Qing Yuen on his 150th and 200th birthdays.

Chinese Superfood

Most commercial Goji Berries are still grown in the Ningxia and Xinjiang provinces of China where they hold an important place in the local culture and economy. Goji Berries can be used in tea blends and juice mixes. We have seen them being used increasingly in cereals, snacks, and nutritional bars.

Western interest in the berries has come in large part due to its recent popular distinction as a “superfood” putting it in the same class as noni, mangosteen, and acai berries. The ORAC test,  used by the FDA to measure the antioxidant level of foods ranks Goji Berries among the highest of all the superfoods. You only need to consume 20 grams of Goji Berries to reach your recommended daily intake of antioxidants. You have to eat over 2000 grams of apples or bananas to get the same effect.
