The Origins of Nepalese Tea

In many ways the tea industry in Nepal is only just beginning to realize its potential. Nepal has always been a reclusive country. Nestled against the Himalayas, it has, until very recently, resisted interference from and interaction with the rest of the world. Now through the expansion of its tea trade the world has begun to pay attention.

Darjeeling by Another Name?

The majority of Nepal’s tea gardens are located within a few kilometers of Darjeeling, India. This means that the terroir of Nepalese tea is virtually identical to those of Darjeeling. Nepal yields nearly identical High Grown, fruity, flowery teas, with lots of character. The irony is stark. Darjeeling, arguably the world’s most famous black tea origin, lays a stone’s throw from Nepal’s gardens, yet Nepal’s teas come in at roughly 50-60% of the price. As a result, Nepalese teas offer an extreme value for customers offering great quality at relatively inexpensive prices.

Nepalese teas, particularly those grown further west, have additional benefits as well. Many would argue that these teas sport a character that is unique on the international stage. With the possibility further political reform, improved tea processing, a recent movement away from pesticides, and an expanding international profile, Nepalese teas are sure to continue to grow in popularity over the next several years.

Nepal Tea Award

QTrade and Nepal

QTrade Teas & Herbs was one of the first North American tea companies to embrace Nepalese teas in their own right. In 2004 QTrade’s founder, Manik Jayakumar, was given a special award by Nepal’s prime minister for helping to introduce Nepalese teas to the North American market. QTrade still feels strongly about, and advocates for the quality of Nepal’s tea. QTrade carries one of the largest and most diverse inventories of organic and conventional Nepalese teas in North America.
